If you’re anything like me, I go through major phases of motivation followed by cyclical burnout.
So far in 2022, my focus has been on trying to break my motivation-burnout cycle, which feels never-ending.
One tip that I have found that has been good for me is trying to live a more well-rounded, balanced lifestyle. But as you know, “balance” and “student” don’t often pair well together.
It’s hard enough for students to juggle studies, work, social life, and everything else that comes along with life. But trying to *balance* it? Almost seems impossible!
Adding balance into my life isn’t what I thought it would be like though. I guess I envisioned balance to be calming and to practice yoga every day. I was wrong.
Having a balanced life doesn’t require a newfound love for yoga. It does however require an understanding that all aspects of your life are equally as important.
Rest and fun cannot be sacrificed for good grades. And good grades can’t be sacrificed for the former.
Learning how to give yourself a break is essential. On the same hand, you need to be able to tell yourself when it is time to sit down and be productive.
Creating Balance
Rest
My Dad always told me that studying is pointless when you’re exhausted. It can sometimes even be a waste of time when you aren’t retaining anything.
Sometimes when I’m having an unproductive evening, I’ll just start my evening routine and get ready to have a more productive day the following day. Now, I dont waste time sitting at my desk half asleep. I’d rather go to sleep and wake up early, ready to go.
If you’re looking for a sign to rest, this is it. Listen to your body. Don’t neglect rest, you need it for optimal performance.
Take breaks
You should also remind yourself that humans aren’t workhorses, and we need breaks, often too.
Go on a walk, stretch get your blood flowing. I have trouble sitting at my desk for long periods of time. Going on a walk is a great way for me to get recentered with my productivity.
Staying hydrated means you go to the bathroom more frequently, which in turn is a good chance to stretch your legs and take a tiny break.
Be kind to yourself
Whether you’re having a really productive day, or not, be kind to yourself no matter what. Some days, you might need a lot of coffee, and that’s okay.
Try your best not to get into the habit of negative self-talk. Positivity can be practiced and learned. Do your best to be mindful of the narrative in your head. Don’t believe your thoughts as they aren’t the truth, they’re only thoughts.
Another tip that I’ve found to be useful is to take time to think about an idea schedule for your busy life. What works best when?
Creating an adjustable routine helps you is to create a template for your day. I find having a morning and evening routine not only motivates me but also helps me stay consistent and live a life I enjoy.
Spice up your routine
Some studies suggest that studying in your room can cause you to be less productive and less energetic.
Try spicing up your normal study routine and go study at your local library. Or even check out a new coffee shop. Maybe reach out to a classmate and organize a stud group.
Romanticize studying
For me, before every study session, I like to treat myself to a nice coffee, whether homemade or purchased.
Getting dressed and feeling fresh for the day helps to motivate me and set the tone. Look good, feel good is a quote I love it live by.
Every day, I get inspiration from Pinterest/youtube to motivate me for what’s ahead.
Stay consistent
What part of my downfall is that I will lose some motivation and it becomes difficult for me to accomplish even the most little tasks. Then when I feel super motivated and inspired I try to make up for all the lost time.
In the end, I become so overworked by trying to overcompensate, I enter into the burnout stage again.
Being consistent can be the most difficult part. When I fall off the wagon, I dread checking my to-do lists because I would be reminded of my failed attempts to complete x,y, and z.
Planning out your to-do lists will help you keep track of your progress.
Having an organizational system will call you on any B.S. and guilt you in to stay on track. You just have to be consistent with checking your system/planner as well.
As mentioned, I’m really making a conscious effort into making 2022 more consistent with my life, and part of that is consistent balance.
I’ve been prioritizing mindfulness activities way more frequently than ever before. Personally, journaling is my absolute favorite way to clear my mind and organize my thoughts.
Journaling also allows me to remind myself what my goals are, as well as why I’m working towards them. Journaling is a very authentic form of motivation, which I sometimes lack.
All in all, having balance in your life will create a less stressful environment. Staying consistent with your routine will allow you to follow through with your commitments and be successful.
