How to Slow Down In 2024

How to wake up from the busyness of today’s world and live intentionally, every day through slowing down

Slowing down is what, exactly?

Everyone seems to be talking about slowing down or wanting to slow down. But I’ve always thought the term “slowing down” to be subjective – which it is.

Slowing down can mean something different to everyone, it’s all dependant on lifestyle, and ultimately the priorities we have in our individual lives.

Priorities can look like family, working/careers, connecting with natural, health-focused (physical, mental, spiritual), religion, relationships, you name it!

But the common theme of slowing down is to start focusing on our priorities that make life worth living – seriously.

At the end of the day, our intuition guides us and we have a general moral compass which leads all of us through every day on this planet. Let me help you explore and narrow down your priorities.

In this blog post, I’ll be talking about what are some examples of slowing down, what some benefits are, and how we can go about slowing down in the fast-paced 21st century.

Why I’m starting to slow down

Until recently, I’ve been very proud of the fact that my life was so busy. I would book any and every event into my calendar in between work and other obligations.

It has gotten to the point where I’m planning social events for 5 weeks from now. To be honest? I’m becoming not only burnt out but also miserable. I’m starting to dread all these amazing commitments I planned weeks ago, but I’ve committed to them.

For my whole life, I think I associated business with success. And sure, being busy means you are doing a lot, but over time, the quality of time you spend is degrading. Sure, I spend many hours with friends, but how much and

I’m almost at the point where I want to throw away my phone and isolate myself in a cabin – okay, not quite there yet, but if I don’t slow down, I’ll be there soon enough.

And you want to know what the real kicker of this all is? I’m 23 years old, with no kids or pets. Like, what is it to be like if I don’t get everything under control now? I don’t want to find out. It’s time for me to be proactive and start making changes.

Join me on this introspective journey, where we’ll unravel the subtle art of slowing down – from the adjustments in our daily routine to the grand, transformative changes that promise a more intentional and fulfilling existence.

Little Changes to Make Immediately

Find Inspiration

Seeking inspiration is a small yet powerful change that can significantly impact daily life. This could involve exploring new interests, discovering art, music, or literature that resonates with me.

Whether it’s visiting a museum, attending a live performance, or simply taking a nature walk, exposing myself to different sources of inspiration can spark creativity, broaden perspectives, and infuse a sense of purpose into each day.

Journal

Starting a journaling practice is a therapeutic and reflective habit that I plan to incorporate more frequently into my routine.

Journaling provides a private space to unload thoughts, emotions, and experiences. It’s a tool for self-discovery and can help in processing feelings, setting goals, and tracking personal growth.

This daily ritual serves as a mental cleanse, allowing me to navigate life with a clearer mind.

Clean and Declutter

The state of our physical environment often reflects our mental state. Taking small steps to clean and declutter my living space can create a sense of order and tranquility.

Tackling one area at a time, whether it’s a room, a desk, or even a closet, can be a gratifying process. A tidy space fosters a more focused and peaceful mindset, making it easier to appreciate the present moment.

Talking with Loved Ones

In the hustle of daily life, genuine connections with loved ones can sometimes take a back seat.

Making a conscious effort to engage in meaningful conversations, whether through a phone call, video chat, or in-person meetings, strengthens relationships. Sharing thoughts, experiences, and emotions with loved ones not only deepens connections but also provides a support system during challenging times.

Reading

Rediscovering the joy of reading is a small change that can yield immense benefits.

Whether it’s fiction, non-fiction, or poetry, immersing myself in a good book offers a temporary escape from the demands of daily life.

It stimulates the mind, enhances empathy, and provides a valuable opportunity to learn and grow.

Setting aside dedicated time for reading, even if it’s just a few minutes a day, can be a rejuvenating habit.

Religion

For those with religious inclinations, reconnecting with one’s faith can be a grounding and comforting practice.

This might involve attending religious services, prayer, or engaging in spiritual rituals. Incorporating moments of reflection and gratitude into daily life can foster a sense of purpose and connection to something greater than oneself.

These little changes serve as building blocks for a more intentional and mindful lifestyle. While they may seem small individually, their cumulative effect can be transformative.

By embracing these habits, I aim to create a foundation for the bigger changes ahead and cultivate a slower, more meaningful way of living in 2024.

Big Changes to Implement

Digital Detox

One of the significant shifts I’m considering is a digital detox. In our hyper-connected world, our devices often dictate our pace. Social media notifications, work emails, and constant connectivity can become overwhelming.

To truly slow down, I plan to establish designated technology-free zones and times, allowing myself to detach and be present in the moment.

Reevaluate Commitments

It’s time to reassess my commitments and learn to say ‘no.’ Overcommitting to social events and professional obligations has left me feeling drained.

By carefully evaluating each commitment, I can prioritize the activities that align with my true values and bring genuine joy.

This might mean letting go of some obligations, but it’s a necessary step toward a more balanced life.

Mindful Consumption

Our fast-paced lifestyle often extends to our consumption habits. Whether it’s fast food or mindless online shopping, taking a moment to consider what we consume can have a profound impact on our well-being.

I plan to adopt a more mindful approach to what I eat, purchase, and even the content I consume, focusing on quality over quantity.

Investing in Hobbies

A vital aspect of slowing down is dedicating time to activities that bring joy and fulfillment. I’ll explore and invest more time in hobbies that resonate with me.

Whether it’s painting, hiking, or learning a musical instrument, these pursuits can provide a sense of purpose and relaxation that is often elusive in our hectic schedules.

Embracing Silence & Stillness

Amidst the constant noise of the modern world, finding moments of silence is essential. I’m considering incorporating meditation or simply spending time in quiet reflection.

Embracing silence allows for introspection and a deeper connection with oneself, fostering a sense of calm and inner peace.

Establishing Boundaries

Setting boundaries is crucial in maintaining a balanced life.

This involves delineating work hours, allocating time for self-care, and clearly communicating with others about personal limits.

By respecting these boundaries, I aim to create a healthier work-life balance and avoid the pitfalls of perpetual busyness.

Nature Retreats

A more drastic yet transformative change I’m considering is occasional retreats to nature.

Spending time away from the hustle and bustle of city life can provide a reset, allowing me to reconnect with the simplicity and beauty of the natural world.

Whether it’s a weekend getaway or an extended retreat, immersing myself in nature can be a powerful antidote to the stresses of modern living.

Remember, slowing down is a personal journey, and what works for one may not work for another.

The key is to find a balance that aligns with individual values and priorities.

As I embark on this journey to slow down in 2024, I look forward to embracing a more intentional and fulfilling way of life.

Love always,

Meredith
